SBCUSD Educators Alisha James and Anthony Morris Honored with 2026 Black Rose Awards

SAN BERNARDINO, CA — Two members of the San Bernardino City Unified School District family are being recognized for their leadership, service and commitment to the community.

Alisha James, a Spanish teacher at San Bernardino High School, and Anthony Morris, Williams Compliance Supervisor in the district’s Maintenance and Operations Department, have been named 2026 Black Rose Award recipients by the San Bernardino Black Culture Foundation.

The Black Rose Awards recognize individuals who have made a lasting difference in the San Bernardino community through leadership, service and dedication.

For James, that impact can be seen in the classroom, where her work as an educator provides students with opportunities to learn, grow and expand their understanding of language and culture.

Morris contributes to student success from another important part of the educational system. Through his work in Maintenance and Operations, he helps support the district’s responsibility to provide school environments that are safe, welcoming and prepared to serve students and staff.

Although their roles are different, both demonstrate an important truth about public education: creating successful schools requires dedicated people throughout an entire district.

Teachers may have the most direct daily interaction with students, but behind every classroom are professionals working to maintain facilities, provide resources, support operations and create an environment where teaching and learning can take place.

San Bernardino City Unified School District celebrated James and Morris for representing the excellence, compassion and dedication the district strives to demonstrate throughout its schools and community.

Their recognition also shines a light on the importance of honoring individuals whose contributions extend beyond their job descriptions and positively affect the communities they serve.

The San Bernardino Black Culture Foundation has a longstanding tradition of recognizing community members through the Black Rose Awards, celebrating people whose leadership and service help strengthen San Bernardino.

For James and Morris, receiving the 2026 honor represents recognition not only of what they do professionally, but also of the difference their commitment can make in the lives of students, colleagues and the larger community.

Congratulations to Alisha James and Anthony Morris on this well-deserved recognition.

What teacher, school employee or community leader has made a lasting difference in your life or the life of your child?

Dodgers Legend Derrel Thomas Brings Reading, Baseball and Fun to Nearly 300 San Bernardino Children

SAN BERNARDINO, CA — Nearly 300 children in San Bernardino enjoyed a memorable morning where books, baseball and community came together at Blair Park.

Los Angeles Dodgers legend Derrel Thomas, a member of the Dodgers’ 1981 World Series championship team, joined local children and San Bernardino City Councilmembers Kim Knaus and Mario Flores at the Dodgers Dreamfield for a special LA Reads Storytime event.

Hosted by the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation in partnership with the City of San Bernardino Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, the event was designed to make reading exciting while encouraging elementary school-aged children to develop a lifelong love of books.

Thomas took center stage not with a baseball bat, but with a book, reading aloud to the children and sharing in a morning that connected the excitement of Dodgers baseball with the importance of literacy.

Young participants also received free books and a special Dodgers bobblehead while supplies lasted, giving them something to take home to remember the experience.

Programs such as LA Reads demonstrate how sports organizations, local government and community partners can work together to make literacy engaging for young people. For children who admire professional athletes, seeing a Dodgers World Series champion take time to celebrate books sends a powerful message: reading can be just as much a part of achieving your dreams as what happens on the field.

The City of San Bernardino thanked the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation and Thomas for helping make reading a memorable experience for hundreds of local children.

For families throughout San Bernardino and the Inland Empire, the event was more than a morning of fun. It was an opportunity to put books directly into children’s hands, create positive memories around reading and remind young people that learning can open doors to possibilities far beyond the classroom.

What was your favorite book as a child—and what book would you recommend to a young reader today?

His leadership has touched far more than classrooms and campuses. Over the years, generations of students, faculty, staff and community members have been part of the institution he helped lead and shape.

Nearly Two Decades of Leadership

Leadership in higher education is ultimately measured not only by programs, buildings or institutional milestones, but also by the lives influenced along the way.

His retirement marks the end of an important era for the Chaffey College community.

What memory, lesson or moment best represents Dr. Henry D. Shannon’s impact on Chaffey College and the community?

Brandon Andrade Makes the Most of His Opportunity With Career Night for Etiwanda

ETIWANDA, CA — September 5, 2026 — Sometimes all a player needs is an opportunity.

After seeing practically no opportunities during Etiwanda High School’s first two games of the season, wide receiver Brandon Andrade entered Friday night’s matchup against Alta Loma with something to prove.

He proved it in a big way.

Andrade delivered the best game of his high school career, turning six targets into six catches for approximately 130 yards and two touchdowns as Etiwanda rolled to a 34-7 victory over Alta Loma.

It was the kind of performance that sends a simple message:

Get Brandon Andrade the football, and he can help you win.

From Few Opportunities to a Breakout Night

The performance becomes even more significant when considering how the season began for Andrade.

Through Etiwanda’s first two games, he had received practically no opportunities to demonstrate what he could contribute offensively. After a conversation with his coach, that changed against Alta Loma.

Andrade was targeted six times.

He caught all six.

And when his number was called, he didn’t simply make routine catches—he produced explosive plays and touchdowns.

His two trips to the end zone helped Etiwanda take command of the game and provided a glimpse of what the Eagles’ offense can look like when Andrade is involved.

A 100-percent catch rate, roughly 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns represents more than an impressive stat line. It demonstrates reliability.

Quarterbacks need receivers they can trust. Coaches need playmakers who capitalize on opportunities. Teams need athletes capable of changing a game.

On Friday night, Andrade showed he can be all three.

Opportunity Met Preparation

There is another part of Andrade’s performance that won’t necessarily appear in the box score.

He was ready.

It would have been easy for a young athlete to become discouraged after receiving so few opportunities during the first two games. Instead, Andrade stayed prepared for the moment when his number would finally be called.

When it came, he delivered the biggest performance of his high school career.

That’s what makes this game important beyond one Friday night.

The question now isn’t simply whether Andrade can produce.

He just showed that he can.

The question becomes what happens when Etiwanda continues giving one of its playmakers opportunities to make plays.

Norco Is Next

There won’t be much time to celebrate.

Etiwanda returns to action Thursday against Norco, giving Andrade and the Eagles another opportunity to build on the momentum created against Alta Loma.

Norco will present another challenge, but Andrade enters Thursday’s matchup with something he didn’t have before Friday night—a breakout performance that showed exactly what he can do when given the opportunity.

Six targets. Six catches. Approximately 130 yards. Two touchdowns.

The best game of Brandon Andrade’s high school career.

And perhaps only the beginning.

What could Brandon Andrade add to Etiwanda’s offense if he continues receiving consistent opportunities?

Daisy Macias Helps Build Stronger Communities Through Hope through Housing Foundation

ONTARIO, CA — For Daisy Macias, strengthening communities is more than a professional responsibility. It has become a consistent thread running through her career, volunteer service and commitment to the city she has called home throughout her life.

Macias serves as Community Relations Manager for Hope through Housing Foundation, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty by providing programs and services that empower individuals and strengthen communities.

Her role places her at the intersection of affordable housing, nonprofit service, community partnerships and resident engagement — areas that can have a profound impact on families seeking greater stability and opportunity.

Macias has described the organization in particularly personal terms. During an interview with KVCR’s IE Latino Voices, she said, “I like to say that at Hope Through Housing, we are the heart of National CORE.”

It is a description that captures the relationship between housing and human services at the center of the organization’s work.

A Lifelong Connection to Ontario

Macias is a lifelong Ontario resident whose professional background has centered on community relations and outreach. She earned an associate degree in business management with an emphasis in health science and previously worked as an account executive in the real estate industry.

Her involvement in Ontario has extended well beyond her professional career.

Before joining the Ontario City Council, Macias served on City boards and commissions, including as President of the Ontario Library Board and as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner. She was also involved in establishing a neighborhood watch committee to help promote safety within her community.

That record of service eventually led to another leadership role.

In December 2024, Macias was appointed to the Ontario City Council representing District 4, with her current term running through December 2028.

Her work with Hope through Housing and her public service share a common focus: improving the quality of life within communities.

Hope through Housing: Housing Is Only the Beginning

Hope through Housing Foundation was established in 1998 by National Community Renaissance, commonly known as National CORE, an affordable housing nonprofit.

National CORE’s philosophy recognizes that providing a safe and affordable home can create stability, but housing alone may not address all of the barriers confronting lower-income families, children and seniors. Hope through Housing was created to bring supportive services directly into affordable housing communities.

Today, Hope through Housing works to improve the well-being and self-sufficiency of lower-income residents living in National CORE affordable apartment communities throughout Southern California and beyond.

The organization’s programs address multiple stages of life.

For children and teenagers, services include after-school programming, academic support, mentoring, enrichment opportunities and college and career readiness.

Families can receive assistance designed to improve financial stability and economic mobility, while seniors and people with disabilities can access services intended to help them remain healthy, connected and independent.

Hope through Housing also provides individualized resident support designed to help people maintain stable housing and move toward greater long-term independence.

Building Relationships That Make Programs Possible

Community relations can be especially important to an organization with such a broad mission.

Nonprofits depend on relationships with residents, businesses, volunteers, donors, government agencies and community organizations to extend the reach of their programs.

As Community Relations Manager, Macias is part of the Hope through Housing team responsible for helping cultivate those connections and increase awareness of the organization’s work. She has also been identified as a contact for sponsorship opportunities connected with National CORE’s An Evening of Hope, a fundraising event benefiting Hope through Housing.

Her work helps put a recognizable community face on a much larger mission.

Breaking the Cycle of Generational Poverty

At the heart of Hope through Housing is the belief that affordable housing can become a platform for something much bigger.

A stable home can give a child a safer environment in which to learn. Academic support can help that child envision college or a career. Financial education and resident services can help parents pursue greater stability. Wellness programs and care management can help older adults maintain independence and age with dignity.

When those individual outcomes are multiplied across neighborhoods, the organization believes stronger residents can contribute to stronger communities.

Hope through Housing summarizes its mission as breaking the cycle of generational poverty by empowering individuals and changing communities.

That mission closely aligns with the community-centered career Macias has built in Ontario.

Whether connecting people with resources through Hope through Housing or serving residents through local government, Daisy Macias represents a form of leadership rooted in being present in the community, understanding its needs and building relationships capable of producing meaningful change.

And perhaps her own description says it best: Hope through Housing is the heart behind the housing — helping ensure that providing someone with a place to live can also become the beginning of an opportunity to thrive.

About Hope through Housing Foundation

Hope through Housing Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization working in partnership with National CORE. Its programs support children, youth, families, seniors and individuals with special needs through educational enrichment, economic mobility initiatives, resident services, health and wellness resources and other supportive programming. Its corporate office is located in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Imaginarium Brings Magic, Lights and Wonder to Ontario

By Gina Smith | SPMG Media

Families throughout Southern California are discovering that one of the Inland Empire’s most captivating attractions isn’t a theme park—it’s an unforgettable walk through a glowing world of imagination.

Located adjacent to Ontario Mills, Imaginarium: Journey to Oz has transformed more than two-and-a-half acres into a dazzling outdoor experience featuring over five million LED lights, larger-than-life illuminated displays, interactive attractions, mirror rooms, live entertainment and countless photo opportunities. The attraction has quickly become one of the region’s most popular evening destinations for families, couples and visitors of all ages.

Inspired by The Wizard of Oz, guests follow the famous Yellow Brick Road through enchanting gardens, glowing forests, vibrant fields of light and magical environments where fantasy comes to life. Along the way, visitors encounter beautifully illuminated versions of beloved Oz characters while exploring immersive worlds designed to delight every generation.

What makes Imaginarium unique is that it blends art, storytelling and technology into a single experience. Beyond the spectacular light displays are infinity mirror rooms, interactive photo stations and live performances featuring aerial artists, circus acts, BMX stunt riders and other entertainers—all included with admission. Visitors typically spend between 90 minutes and two hours exploring everything the attraction has to offer.

The visionary behind Imaginarium is Lulu Huang, who founded the concept after bringing one of China’s beloved lantern festival traditions to the United States in 2011. Her original event, Global Winter Wonderland, evolved into today’s Imaginarium, which now appears in several cities across the country. Huang’s mission has been to combine traditional lantern artistry with modern lighting technology to create immersive experiences that inspire joy, wonder and togetherness.

Its popularity is easy to understand. Nearly every corner of Imaginarium is designed to be experienced—and photographed. Social media has helped fuel its growth as visitors eagerly share breathtaking images of glowing rose gardens, magical forests, colorful tunnels and spectacular nighttime landscapes. Yet beyond the Instagram-worthy backdrops, the attraction succeeds because it encourages families to slow down, explore together and experience genuine moments of wonder.

For Ontario, attractions like Imaginarium continue to elevate the city’s reputation as one of Southern California’s premier destinations for shopping, entertainment and family recreation. Combined with Ontario Mills, Toyota Arena and the city’s expanding entertainment district, experiences like this help draw visitors from throughout the Inland Empire, Los Angeles and Orange County.

Whether you’re looking for a memorable family outing, an unforgettable date night or simply a chance to experience something different, Imaginarium offers an enchanting escape where imagination truly comes alive.

FBI Search Warrants Rock Inland Empire Political Leadership

ONTARIO, Calif. — A series of FBI search warrants served Tuesday at multiple Inland Empire locations has sent shockwaves through the region’s political landscape, including searches connected to the homes of San Bernardino County Supervisor Curt Hagman and Ontario Mayor Pro Tem Alan Wapner.

According to reports from CBS Los Angeles, federal agents executed search warrants at several locations as part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the nature of the investigation, and no criminal charges have been announced against Hagman, Wapner, or any other individuals in connection with the searches.

The developments quickly became a major topic throughout San Bernardino County, where both officials have held influential leadership roles for years. Hagman serves on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, while Wapner has been one of Ontario’s longest-serving elected officials and currently serves as the city’s mayor pro tem.

The searches have also taken on political significance as Ontario prepares for the November municipal election. Ontario Mayor Paul Leon, who is challenging Wapner in the upcoming race, publicly called for Wapner to step down following news that the FBI had served a search warrant at his home.

Mayor Leon told CBS Los Angeles that he believes the city deserves leadership free from the cloud of an active federal investigation. Wapner has not announced any plans to resign, and neither he nor Hagman has been charged with a crime.

It is important to note that a search warrant is an investigative tool used by law enforcement to gather evidence. It does not imply guilt or establish that criminal conduct has occurred. Federal investigations often continue for months or even years before prosecutors determine whether charges are warranted.

As of now, the FBI has released little information regarding the scope of the investigation, citing the ongoing nature of the case.

Residents across the Inland Empire will likely be watching closely as more information becomes available, particularly given the potential impact on local government and the upcoming election.

SPMG Media will continue to monitor this developing story and provide updates as additional verified information is released.
